My primary interests are fighters, shooters, and beat 'em ups, with maybe the occasional oddball game or two (the Windjammers of the world.) I was thinking of the Neo-Geo MVS, the CPS-2, or maybe even the Naomi, although obviously with a standard six-button controller I wouldn't really be able to play something like, say, Crazy Taxi.Īny thoughts? I don't know how common this kind of project is. Is this is a workable idea? And if so, what hardware would be best suited for it? It'd be nice if it was a system with interchangeable discs or cartridges. Whatever I use would likely be displayed on a 21-inch 4:3 flat-panel monitor, so it'd need to be something that could be connected or at least converted to DVI or VGA. So it occurred to me that maybe it'd be possible to build a new cabinet, but with an actual arcade board, rather than a PC, inside of it. And also collecting genuine games is fun!
(I anticipate enjoying the woodworking part of this project a whole lot more than the software part.) Plus, I'm concerned that with access to 30,000 games or whatever I'll wind up sampling them more than actually spending real time with an individual game and getting great at it. But after further reading, the process of setting up MAME, and a front end, and getting the right versions of the right ROMs that correspond with my version of MAME, is beginning to sound like a bit of a pain. My original plan was to do the standard thing and build a MAME cabinet. So I have a bit of an odd question: like many folks I'm planning on building my own cabinet.
